EMC DIVERSITY STATEMENT

Great music comes from people from all backgrounds and cultural experiences and has the power to connect and unite. Yet, a musical landscape exists today that does not reflect that rich tapestry. EMC acknowledges this and pledges a continual effort to address and sow the seeds of inclusion through an intentional outreach in our search for talent in our membership, patronage, board leadership, and through a repertoire that widens our musical lens and reflects the world around us. It is our desire that EMC’s energized focus and unswerving goals on diversity and inclusion ensures that our audiences and the communities we serve and engage, experience the magic and richness of a shared humanity from the music we present.

Join us for this sweeping oratorio by R. Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943), a noted composer of African descent. The text, from scripture and folklore, is a retelling of Moses leading his people out of captivity and into the Promised Land. The first performance of this work at the Cincinnati May Festival in 1937 was simulcast to a national radio audience and ended in controversy. This season's Carnegie Hall revival has reintroduced contemporary audiences to this grand work.
